  • Mini-gastric bypass

(OAGB or One Anastomosis Gastric bypass)

The “mini gastric bypass” is an operation in which the stomach is reduced, and the digestive tract is diverted. This procedure, also known as Omega loop gastric bypass or one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), is comparable to the standard gastric bypass (see above), a combined procedure aimed at both, limited food intake and reduced nutrient absorption.

During the operation, the upper part of the stomach is first stapled to make a new, smaller stomach. This new stomach pouch is longer than the standard bypass and with the size of a kiwi.

The small intestine is not sectioned but connected to the new stomach 150cm till 200cm from the beginning of the small intestine. This means that no part of the stomach or small intestine is removed. This procedure bypasses the stomach and duodenum so that no more food can pass through.

Because of the reduced absorption of fats and vitamins, a daily intake of vitamins is necessary after this operation. In addition, it is strongly advised to limit sugar intake or alcohol consumption after this procedure to minimize the development of the dumping phenomenon, which can cause severe weakness leading to sweating, palpitations and, in exceptional cases, diarrhea.

    Results

    Weight

Studies on large series of patients have shown that on average 75% of obesity has disappeared one year after the procedure.
For example, in an overweight patient weighing 50 kg, this means a weight loss of 38 kg after 1 year. After 5 years, there is still an average loss of overweight of more than 70%. This is mainly due to the patient’s diet and can therefore vary greatly from one individual to another.

    Other beneficial effects

More than 90% of co-morbidities (diseases caused by obesity) disappear or improve following this procedure: arterial hypertension, type II diabetes, back pain, sleep apnea, depression, and others.

    Advantages of mini gastric bypass

    • Beneficial effect on diabetes, sleep apnea, blood pressure, etc.
    • The procedure is reversible, and a simple revision is possible.
    • Rapid feeling of satiety.
    • Reduced sensation of hunger.

    Disadvantages of mini gastric bypass

    • Medium-term vitamin deficiency.
    • Bile reflux into the stomach or esophagus. A minority must be converted to a standard gastric bypass.
    • Complaints of dumping when consuming sugars.
